Information about instrument lessons
Summer semester begins on: 1 May
Winter semester begins on: 1 November
Applications must be submitted before the start of the semester. The registration deadlines are April 1 and October 1.
Children from 8 years of age and adults are welcome to sign up for trial lessons to try out instruments.
The lessons are held in cooperation with the Offenburg/Ortenau music school.
The instruments are provided free of charge by the city band, but the teaching materials must be purchased by the student.
The city band partially covers the tuition fee. The longer you attend classes and play in various orchestras, the lower the rate becomes.
Students are encouraged to earn performance badges. Through these badges and the appropriate entry age, students gradually move from the children's wind orchestra to the youth wind orchestra and finally to the city band. The respective entry points into the orchestras are coordinated individually with the teacher and conductor.
All students pay a fixed price of 56.00 euros per month, regardless of how long they attend classes.
The lesson duration can be chosen individually and is either 25, 30, 35, 40 or 45 minutes.
Students begin with 25 minutes of individual instruction. If they are diligent and interested, the teacher can, in consultation with the conductor, increase the lesson time for a further semester to allow for even more learning.
After about 1 to 2 years of lessons, the student should play in the music school's children's wind orchestra to encourage collaborative music-making.
After approximately two to three years, the goal is to earn the bronze performance badge. Once students have achieved this and are at least 13 years old, they can transfer to the Hausach/Fischerbach Youth Orchestra. Because they actively participate in the club's activities, their dues are reduced to €46.00 per month.
After five to six years of instruction, students have the opportunity to take the silver performance badge exam, which then entitles them to join the city band.
The training ends after this goal has been achieved, but can be extended for talented and interested students.
There is a discount for siblings: they also pay only 46.00 euros per month.
01 Long-term benefits
Learning an instrument makes sense because music is present in all areas of life – on the radio, streaming services, or at events – and you can enjoy it throughout your life.
02 Happiness and health
Music stimulates dopamine production in the brain, which triggers feelings of happiness. Music also reduces stress and promotes mental health, especially during stressful times.
03 relaxation
In music, there's no pressure to perform like in sports. You can simply play to relax and have fun, without having a specific goal in mind.
04 Development
Playing an instrument promotes motor and cognitive skills. It strengthens fine motor skills and can even prevent dementia by keeping the brain active.
05 Character development
Monitoring your own progress builds confidence. Practice fosters patience and discipline, and constructive criticism from your teacher helps you become open to feedback.
06 Fun in making music
Learning an instrument is exciting and enjoyable. With diligence, you can discover various musical styles, from film scores to your own compositions.
07 Music connects
Music is a universal language that connects people. It's not just about words, but about the emotions behind the sounds.
08 Creativity
Playing an instrument stimulates the imagination. You can invent and experiment with melodies, thus unleashing your creativity without limits.
09 Academic performance
Studies show that children who play an instrument achieve better grades in all school subjects because making music stimulates the brain in many ways.
10 Early entry for success
Children who begin music early have a better chance of success in the music world. As they get older, it becomes more difficult to learn new things, so an early start is advantageous.
